The Child Endangerment Sign & signs of abuse

Some children cannot say out loud that they are unsafe. A silent, simple hand signal gives them another way to be heard, and adults need to know what to look for.

How the sign is made

An open hand raised with the palm facing forward and the thumb out to the side

1. Palm out

Raise one hand with your palm facing outward.

A hand with four fingers up and the thumb folded across the palm

2. Tuck the thumb

Fold your thumb across your palm.

A closed fist with the fingers folded down over the tucked thumb

3. Close the fingers

Fold your fingers down over your thumb.

What does the sign mean?

The sign can be used silently to indicate that someone may need help.

If you see the sign

Stay calm. Do not confront a suspected abuser or put the child at greater risk. Report the concern through a safe child-protection channel.

Know the signs of abuse

  • Running away, or refusing to go home

Situational signs
